King's return to supernatural horror is uneasily immense, compellingly intricate and irresistibly gripping. When the smalltown of Chester's Mill, Maine, is encircled by an invisible force field, the people inside must exert themselves to survive. The condition deteriorates rapidly due to the dome's ecological effects and the scheming of Big Jim Rennie, an obscenely self-righteous local politician and drug lord who likes the idea of having an cut off populace to control. Opposing him is an Iraq veteran Dale “Barbie” Barbara, newspaper editor Julia Shumway, a group of teen skateboarders and others who want to solve the riddle of the dome. King handles the vast cast of characters masterfully but callously, forcing them to live (or not) with the cost of hasty decisions. Readers will recognize themes and images from King's earlier fiction, and while this novel doesn't have the moral weight of, say, The Stand, nevertheless, it's a nonstop thrill ride as well as a disturbing, moving meditation on our capacity for good and evil.

Christopher Nolan’s Inception is without doubt one of the most talked-about, films of the year. I’m certain, it might have a little something to do with the fact that his last film was The Dark Knight, but also because his follow-up stars Leonardo DiCaprio and appears to be a lot like The Matrix.

Not much is known about Inception, except that it’s a sci-fi thriller that takes place within the architecture of the mind. Based on the trailer, it would seam DiCaprio is part of a team that can by some means enter the minds of others and recover important information. As such, the real trippy parts of the preview – like when the water is turned sideways or when the guys are fighting on the side of a wall – all probably take place within someone’s actual mind. Bizarre is right!

But Warner Bros. is going to have to find a way to better sell this flick as it nears its summer release date if they want folks to show up in droves at the movie theater. Sure, you have DiCaprio and Ellen Page, but you also have an original idea that might be hard for some to grasp. What do you think? Is this the biggest film of 2010 or does it just look too weird?

Dan O'Bannon, the modest sci-fi screenwriter and peculiar horror authority behind the "Alien" film franchise, died Thursday at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica after a 30-year fight with Crohn's disease. He was 63.

His work on a range of movies  from 1983's "Blue Thunder" to "Lifeforce" and the mid-1980s low-budget "Invaders From Mars" to 1990's Paul Verhoeven-Arnold Schwarzenegger blockbuster "Total Recall" made him an dominant figure in the genre world, as his did his 1985 directorial debut, "The Return of the Living Dead."

But it was "Alien" with which he made his most lasting mark, helping to fashion characters and monsters that are still around today (Fox is readying an "Alien" prequel with original director Ridley Scott resuming helming duties.)

The St. Louis-born O'Bannon met John Carpenter at USC, where the two wrote a short film — Carpenter's thesis film — that turned into the cosmic low-budget comedy "Dark Star" (1974). O'Bannon co-wrote the pic with Carpenter, who also directed, and served as effects supervisor, production designer, editor and actor (playing Sgt. Pinback).

"Dan had an enormous talent and an acerbic, biting wit," Carpenter said. "He had a very high IQ, but I think he was under-appreciated and underserved by the film business. He took a stand against all manner of authority."

O'Bannon was hired by George Lucas to do some effects work on "Star Wars" in 1977, then set "Alien" on its course into space with his and Ronald Shusett's bug-filled action spec script "The Star Beast."

He worked as a script doctor in recent decades and co-wrote 2004's "AVP: Alien vs. Predator."

O'Bannon is survived by his wife, Diane Lindley O'Bannon, and son Adam. A memorial service is pending.

After patiently waiting for what seems like forever, Paramount has finally released the long-awaited trailer for Iron Man 2…and it's freakin' awesome! What I really like about Iron Man is that here we have one of the only costumed superhero franchises where everyone knows who's in the costume. That's obviously a main selling point in this trailer, as it shows how Tony Stark (aka Iron Man, aka Robert Downey Jr.) is really going to town with the whole Iron Man celebrity image.
